Mythological inhabitants of water

There are a lot of mythological creatures that lived in water according to myths. They were the creatures made of water and water foam. According to myths the goddess of love and beauty was born from the sea foam.

Here are several creatures that are believed to live in water:

- The Afanc is a monster in Welsh legends that lived in the lake. It is pictured differently. But usually it is a monster that is very much alike the crocodile. This monster is evil and is frequently pictured as a demon. According to different traditions the killer of the monster varies. It was killed either by Arthur or by Peredur.

- Jasconius is a huge fish in the mythology. The story of Saint Brendan and Sindbad the Sailor mention this monster. The heroes mistake the huge fish for the island and made a camp on its back, lightening fires and celebrating the holiday.

- The Neck is the water spirit who took the form of a human body. This is the creature from Germanic mythology. But sometimes this monster takes the form of a dragon. In German Neck is associated with a mermaid depicted as half-woman half-fish. Sometimes the neck was also associated with sirens and people believed it was singing attracting women, men and children.

- Watery or vodyanoy in Slavic traditions was the creature made of water. In fact it is the spirit of the water as Neck or Nix in English and German cultures. This is a male spirit who appears in the form of an old man with long green hair and beards. Sometimes he is pictured with a tail of a fish or paws instead of his hands. Vodyanoy may kidnap people to turn them into slaves to serve him.

- Undines are mythological creatures or water elementals and are considered to be the water spirits. If a human falls in love with the undine and marries her, she may obtain the soul and turn into human. They live in waterfalls and other ponds. They like to sing and sometimes if you stay quit you may hear their singing.

- Triton is the son of Poseidon in traditions of Ancient Greece. He is the god of sea pictured as a man with a body of a fish. His symbol is a conch shell with the help of which he had the ability to raise huge waves. Triton was considered to be a far parent of Athena according to some legends.

- A sea serpent is a snake-like monster that lives in the sea. There are a lot of witnesses who claim they saw the sea serpent and these witnesses appear till nowadays. But there is no evidence of their existence and scientists don't accept the existence of the monster. All sightings are thought to be illusions and misidentification of other sea inhabitants.

There are also a lot of other inhabitants of water. They are Ri, Samebito, Selkie, Rusalka, Shen and many others. But people from all parts of the world believed in sea-monsters and were afraid of them.
